Singers should love choral music!  Our members bring with them the joy of singing with others, striving for excellence, and a desire to spread our music throughout the community.  You do not need to be a professional musician to sing with the choir, but we do expect you to have had some prior singing experience.  While your sight-reading doesn’t have to be award-winning, you should have an understanding of the score and the ability to learn and retain the music quickly.

The audition consists of three parts: 1) the prepared solo, 2) sight-reading, and 3) vocalizations to determine your range and voice part.

  • Prepared solo — Learn the first twenty measures of a folk song titled Down By the Sally Gardens arranged by Benjamin Britten.  You should do this before the audition so that you may demonstrate the color of your voice and show your commitment to learning music independently.  A pianist will play for your audition.
High Voice – Down By the Sally Gardens

Medium Voice – Down By the Sally Gardens
Low Voice – Down By the Sally Gardens
  • Sight-reading — All those auditioning will read melodic and rhythmic patterns.
  • Vocalization — This will be an opportunity for the artistic director to vocalize you from the piano and facilitate a discussion on where your voice feels most comfortable.

General FAQ’s

When and where are rehearsals?

Our rehearsals are held weekly on Monday evening from 7:00-9:30 pm. We rehearse at the Haddonfield Center & School for the Performing Arts, attached to Grace Church located at 19 Kings Highway East, Haddonfield, NJ 08033. The rehearsal venue is conveniently located next to the Haddonfield PATCO Station with direct service to Center City Philadelphia and free parking for those who drive to rehearsal.

What is the attendance policy?

We expect members to attend all rehearsals. We do recognize that members may occasionally miss one or two rehearsals per semester due to illness or scheduling conflicts. Members should work closely with their section leaders concerning their attendance records. Members should also warn section leaders ahead of time of any potential conflicts.

Are there membership fees?

Yes, our yearly dues are $200. If you join in January, halfway through our normal season, the semester dues are $100. We also have a reduced full-time student rate of $45 per semester. Dues help our organization pay for rehearsal space, general operating expenses, insurance, and the salaries of artistic staff.

We also will charge you for your music. This fee is usually between $30-45 per concert and allows choristers to keep purchased music.

Do I have to purchase my own concert attire?

Members are required to provide their own “concert black” attire. We provide simple guidelines for what is acceptable.

How often does the chorus perform?

Our rehearsals for our four concerts began on September 11, 2023 and conclude with the Sunday, May 5 concert.

The 2023-24 concert dates are:  October 29; December 16-17; March 10; and May 5. Mandatory dress rehearsals are a day or two ahead of the concerts, and typically we have one Saturday morning rehearsal for each concert.

Are there activities outside of singing with the chorus?

Yes! There are many committees that are vital to the operation of our chorus. These committees allow our membership to share their professional skills to benefit the chorus.
