The haunting “Lacrimosa,” one of the best-known passages from Mozart’s unfinished masterpiece, Requiem, has found a new audience through social media, appearing regularly in videos on TikTok and Instagram.

But hearing it performed live, with a full chorus, orchestra, and a quartet of vocal soloists, Soprano Jennifer Casey Cabor, Mezzo Soprano Taylor Hillary Boikins, Tenor Min Jin, and Bass Jim Williams, in an intimate concert setting, offers something a screen cannot.

For Bay Atlantic Symphony music director Jed Gaylin and Greater South Jersey Chorus director Christopher Thomas, the performance also represents something larger: the continuation of a musical partnership that has brought together two of South Jersey’s major performing arts organizations.

“When we do collaborate, it’s not like him saying, ‘We are the orchestra, we need a choir, so get in here and sing with us,’” Thomas said. “We are all part of this musical experience.”

The two organizations have collaborated regularly since 2019, when they performed Puccini’s Messa di Gloria. Since then, they have returned to the partnership every other year, building a relationship that both conductors say has become increasingly natural.
